12 February – 13 June 2025

The Kunstpalast is delighted to present the first large-scale solo exhibition of Ethiopian
artist Elias Sime (b. 1968) in the German-speaking world. Sime constructs large-format
reliefs out of everyday objects and discarded electronic components. Interwoven wires,
rearranged keyboard elements and collaged motherboards become ornamental, abstract or
figurative three-dimensional images.

By repurposing and utilising electronic waste, Sime has developed an enthralling aesthetic. The elements in his works bear reference to their previous journeys around the world and the many hands they have passed through on the way. In his artistic practice, Sime juxtaposes the global with the local and draws our attention to the influence of technology on our society, as well as its mass consumption and the effects of this.
Although he is relatively unknown in Germany, Sime’s work has been gaining wide
international recognition since his participation in the Venice Biennale in 2022. His works can be found in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

This exhibition was initiated by the Arnolfini in Bristol and has been adapted for Düsseldorf.

Curator: Felicity Korn, Head of the 20th and 21. Jahrhunderts
