Exhibition

“Die KLEINE” is the closing exhibition of the art competition for Düsseldorf primary schools, which this year is staged by the Kunstpalast for the first time. Each participating class has jointly created a work of art on the theme “my hometown Düsseldorf”.

In the process, the children thought about ways in which they wish to present their city or their favourite spot.

All visitors are invited to vote on their favourite work shown in the exhibition and to nominate it for the visitors’ prize. The winning class will be announced at the end of the exhibition and receive a fantastic prize!

Exhibition

For the first time an art exhibition in Düsseldorf dedicated to photography sets out to unravel all of the medium’s many facets.

This is made possible by the Kunstpalast’s recent acquisition of more than 3,000 photographs. In the presentation of the new collection, avant-garde icons ranging from Man Ray through to Bernd and Hilla Becher are complemented by surprising, lesser known positions, while series of works are juxtaposed with individual pictures.

The exhibition comprising around 150 works presents a panorama ranging from the earliest techniques to the snapshot, elucidating a wealth of application contexts spanning the areas of press, publicity, science, through to fashion. The exhibition offers different thematic points of access to photography and illuminates the medium’s rich diversity.

Exhibition

A significant number of the approximately 100 paintings, drawings and sculptures will be presented to the public for the first time. The presentation, which also includes prints and arts and crafts objects based on motifs used by Kauffmann, brings back to life a time when the word went around that “the whole world is Angelica-mad”.

Angelika Kauffmann, according to J. G. Herder the “possibly most cultivated woman in Europe”, was a liberal-minded neoclassical artist highly acclaimed throughout Europe. Admired for her artistic talents, her broad education and impeccable character, Kauffmann enjoyed a career that, for female artists at the time, was unprecedented. She made a name for herself with her remarkable early works, received artistic training in Italy and came to fame and fortune in London as a history painter and portraitist. Later, the astute and well networked businesswoman opened one of the most sought-after studios in Rome.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Exhibition

Born in 1944 and raised in Duisburg, the German photographer spent two years working on an uncompromising collection of 140 photographs that will shed an unusual light on his colossal oeuvre, spanning from the early 1980’s to the present day.

The exhibition offers an extensive, first-hand look at images that are usually short-lived, being mostly commissioned by monthly fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, Rolling Stone or W Magazine. Lindbergh’s comprehension of fashion photography is that it can – and should – exist very well without putting fashion in the center. His images transcend their own context, becoming part of contemporary culture and photographic history. Untold Stories celebrates the legacy of Peter Lindbergh, who passed away in September 2019, while showcasing this master’s highly personal approach to fashion photography.

Porsche-Project

On the occasion of the “70 years of Porsche sports cars” anniversary, a joint project between Porsche and Peter Lindbergh was created in 2018. At a beach in northern France, an iconic black-and-white picture series was created in 2018 with a historic 911 and the concept study “Mission E” – the model for the all-electric Porsche Taycan.
Even after this cooperation, the contact between Peter Lindbergh and Porsche was maintained; a special partnership has developed. Porsche Deutschland is the main sponsor of the exhibition “Untold Stories” by Peter Lindbergh and pays special tribute to this legacy. The pictures of the Lindbergh shooting will be exhibited together with behind-the-scenes pictures at Porsche on Sylt (Keitumer Landstraße 14, 25980 Sylt | Tinnum) from 22.6. – 1.10.2020.

Exhibition

Anger and rage are among our most intense emotions. Many consider them dangerous; others would like to make them socially acceptable. Current international events show how strongly they shape discussions about our social interactions: conspiracy theories, racially motivated violence, extremist terror, or “fake news” are just a few of the worrying consequences of populist power politics that fuel fears and focus on polarisation and exclusion. This is countered by worldwide protests against totalitarian structures, the oppression of minorities, and the deepening of social divisions in society. In a number of countries, democracy appears to be in crisis and many people are increasingly in a state of turmoil.

The exhibition Time for Outrage! is based on the eponymous 2010 essay by French resistance fighter Stéphane Hessel and brings together some forty international artists who visualise, reflect, and comment on various facets of anger and rage in our society. Their works deal with socio-political situations and inspire reflection.
Rather than presenting solutions of problems, the works are about testing the possibilities of taking a stance in the face of current societal and social grievances. The artists presented invariably share an explicitly political attitude that is characteristic of their entire oeuvre.

The exhibition includes installation art, photographs, videos, paintings, drawings and sculptures by Kader Attia (*1970), Monica Bonvicini (*1965), Andrea Bowers (*1965), Peggy Buth (*1971), Thomas Hirschhorn (*1957), Šejla Kamerić (*1976), Iris Kettner (*1968), Liz Magic Laser (*1981), Erik van Lieshout (*1968), Bjarne Melgaard (*1967), Signe Pierce (*1988), Julian Röder (*1981), Santiago Sierra (*1966), Adriana Varejão  (*1964), Ahmet Ögüt (*1981) and many others.

Refik Anadol, born in Istanbul in 1985, studied photography, video and art in his native city and subsequently design and media art in Los Angeles.

At present, Anadol is a lecturer of Design Media Arts at University of California. His works have been widely exhibited internationally and received numerous awards

Data and pixels, algorithms and calculations – these are the elements with which Refik Anadol creates his aesthetic data sculptures packed with surprising effects and flowing forms. Anadol is a pioneer in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He explores the boundaries of the imagination and uses state-of-the-art technologies to examine the perception and experience of space and time. In his works he brings to the fore immersive environments as well as a hybrid interplay of art, science and technology. Invisible data become visible to the human eye, offering a new narrative of the digitalised world.

The Kunstpalast presents Anadol’s monumental data sculpture “Machine Hallucinations – Satellite Simulations: B” dating from 2021. For this work, the artist used two million images captured and recorded by the International Space Station (ISS) and Hubble space telescopes as well as the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (MRO). GAN algorithms process these images, endowing them with a new aesthetic. A GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) is a machine learning framework which is able to generate new data autonomously by means of two competing artificial neuronal networks that are capable of learning from each other.

The exhibition is curated by Alain Bieber, Head of Time-based Media at Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf.

The exhibition was made possible with the support of Art Collection Telekom and Refik Anadol Studio.

Heinz Mack, Licht-Architektur (Modell für eine schwimmende Forschungsstation in der Arktis), 1976

Exhibition

On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the Kunstpalast dedicates an exhibition to the sculptor and painter Heinz Mack (*1931), focussing on the first three decades of his artistic career.

Marking the 90th birthday of Heinz Mack (*1931), the Kunstpalast dedicates an exhibition to the artist, focussing primarily on his early oeuvre from the 1950s to the 1970s. The show illuminates the innovative and revolutionary spirit with which Mack unlocked new spheres of thinking and working outside academic requisites. The selection of around 100 exhibits, including a number of expansive works, traces the key stages of Mack’s artistic career, such as his studies at the Academy of Art Düsseldorf, his ZERO period, as well as presenting light-based environmental art and his conquest of outdoor spaces by way of large-scale projects in nature.
Encompassing both famous and rarely-shown works – loans from institutions and private collections from Belgium, Great Britain, Liechtenstein and Germany, as well as from the artist himself – the exhibition invites visitors to follow a chronological route through Mack’s oeuvre. Alongside paintings, sculptures and light-kinetic installations, the show comprises photography, film, stage design and the artist’s architectural projects. Legendary Land Art projects take visitors to the North African desert and to the ice of the Arctic ocean. Heinz Mack’s artistic exploration of immaterial mediums such as light, time and motion continues to have a significant influence on many artists to this day.

At NRW-Forum the artist Monika Stricker (*1978), winner of the Landsberg Prize in 2020, is showing a selection of her latest paintings as well as a projection. Her works delves in-depth into the anatomy of the human body and its sexual function. The artist, who thus far has primarily worked as a sculptor, uses painting and projection as additional media with which she explores routes of access to physical experiences. Stricker’s pictures exude an intense sensuality which is at the same time fuzzy and disturbing. The artist completed her studies with Rita McBride in 2005. She lives and works in Brussels.

The Düsseldorf entrepreneur Georg Landsberg, who initiated and funds the annual art award, has had friendly ties with the Kunstpalast for many years. Since 2019, Landsberg and a jury of experts have awarded the prize to artists who graduated from the Düsseldorf Academy of Art at least 10 years ago.

The Landsberg Prize supports and pays tribute to artists who are characterised by a distinctly autonomous artistic position.

Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Der heilige Ignatius vor der Madonna, um 1672/75

Exhibition

Presenting an exhibition comprising around 120 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and glass objects, the Kunstpalast will be exploring the rarely-illuminated traces of the Baroque period in art after 1950. In a number of artist rooms, characteristic works of different post-war stylistic movements, such as Art Informel, abstraction or ZERO will be juxtaposed with works from the Baroque period.

At first sight, such a confrontation of works by artists including Karl Otto Götz, Dorothy Iannone, Niki de Saint Phalle, Dieter Roth, Bernard Schultze and Hann Trier with Baroque art by Agostino Carracci, Giovanni Battista Gaulli or Hendrick Goltzius may come as a surprise. Their juxtaposition drives home that many artists after 1950 reflected artistic principles of the Baroque style in their own creative work. In terms of subject matter, the dialogic compilations explore themes such as festival culture, passion, spirituality, as well as constructing new experiential spaces.

With this exhibition, the Kunstpalast pays tribute to the 10th anniversary of Stiftung Sammlung Kemp. Willi Kemp (1927–2020) died on 5 December. The show is presented as an homage to the Düsseldorf art collector and tax consultant, who in 2011 donated to the Kunstpalast his collection comprising nearly 3,000 works, with a focus on Art Informel, ZERO and colour field painting. Selected pieces from the Kemp Collection are united with works from the Baroque period from the museum’s holdings.

The exhibition comprising around 120 paintings presents a selection of Liebermann’s works alongside those by a number of colleagues from different European art hubs. The selection of works demonstrates the lively exchange between artists in this era and their mutual influence across national boundaries, as well as the extent to which Liebermann’s success was linked with his exploration of art from other countries. In this respect, Düsseldorf also played an important part.
